Amazon.com Product Description With powerful processing power and ample memory, the Toshiba Satellite L305-S5961 notebook PC is a great mobile computing choice for the home, students, and small businesses. The integrated 54g Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g) lets you stay connected or work the Web at any wireless hotspot, while the cool Onyx Blue finish satisfies your requirements for style. It features a large, bright 15.4-inch XGA-resolution LCD (1280 x 800)--perfect for viewing multiple application screens or watching widescreen movies on DVD. It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. The dual-layer DVD±RW drive also burns CDs. It offers dual-core productivity from its 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium T4200 processor for excellent multitasking. It also includes a 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM (4 GB maximum), and a Intel GMA 4500M video card with up to 830 MB of shared video RAM. Additionally, this Toshiba notebook is RoHS-compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. This PC comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, 32-bit), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. | | | | - Processor: The 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium T4200 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache (for a 2 MB total), and they have an 800 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The generous 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) is a great start. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio This notebook has a 15.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500M, which uses shared video memory (up to 830 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two stereo speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

OK If you want to be repaired often February 8, 2010 AJS (Laughlin NV USA) This is an awful machine.
The weakest point is where the power plugs into the laptop. It doesn't feel tight. One month after I bought it, the jack was loose inside the case, but it was still usable.
Two months after I bought it, the disk drive went south. I sent it in for repair, and it took 3 weeks. I was told that it would cost $250 to fix the power jack. I said not to that. When it came back, there was no OS on the disk, and it took 12 hours to load the OS from the CD's. I ran my own diagnostics, and saw that there were lots of disk errors. Back to repair again. This time it only took a week, but the disk was fine.
Four months after I purchased it, the computer would not charge. Called Tech Support, and the ordered me a new power supply and cord. But what I got was two cords, and no power supply. The packing slip said the power supply was shipped. I called tech support back, and the issue was "escalated". I was told the power supply was back-ordered. When I told him the tech checked before and said it was in stock, and the packing slip showed it was shipped I was told I was wrong. It was unknown when the b=power supply would be in stock. I waited a week, and called again. Same Crap. So I called back, and told them I wanted to send the laptop back in for repair. They said OK. A week later the laptop arrived back, with a replaced power supply. It worked.
Two months after that, the disk drive went again. That is the 3rd disk drive in six months.
I purchased a western digital drive from amazon, slapped it in, and everything is working.
I recently fixed the jack problem by buying a metal jack at radio shack for $2.99 and replaced it within an hour. The laptop was easy to take apart and the screw holes are all marked with the screw size. (I am technically inclined).
I would NOT purchase a Toshiba Laptop again. Bad tech support (I didn't know what I was talking about when I told them the power supply was shipped), there are TONS of Toshiba Laptops out there with power jack problems, and three disk drives within 5 months is a little much.
Wish I had one for me October 29, 2009 Barry Joshua I got it for my wife over six months ago and it has been good to her. She is a nursing student and drops her laptop about once a week. This one has been able to withstand multiple impacts with the floor without problem. Maybe we have just been lucky but I am of the opinion that when my laptop dies, I will most likely order a Toshiba product myself.
Great computer - Great price October 26, 2009 Kevin L. Keith (Parker, Colorado USA) I've had this computer for several months now and I love it. I selected it because it was a "best buy" selection on Consumer Reports at the time. It is light and handles all the tasks I need. I use it a lot for presentations including music, DVDs and Powerpoint. It replaced my old Dell notebook and performs as well for a lot less. I use Norton virus protection on it, have not upgraded to Windowa 7 yet and use Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. It is my home computer so have not run large spreadsheets requiring lots of processing power. It has my strong recommendation.
Great "my first laptop", but scared to shop online October 11, 2009 Demetria A. Bellinger The computer is great my daughter loves it! The only problem I had was with Amazon! I paid extra to have it deliver that Saturday and didn't get it until Tuesday. When I called them that Sunday, they told me it had been delivered to the wrong address and they would send another free of charge. I was upset because they made me feel like it was my fault. My extra shipping was not refunded and UPS was mean to me. Now I'm scared to make purchases online because that was alot of money in limbo and no security.
excellent value September 13, 2009 Vijay R (United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
this is an excellent laptop for everyday tasks like email, document & photo editing, itunes etc. it is not a gaming machine. it is among the lightest in its class at 5.4 pounds and looks solidly built. the preinstalled vista premium boots up fast. no issues that I can think of. some sites have talked about the power plug coming loose inside the laptop; hope toshiba has fixed it in this model. i removed the shovelware and norton, installed avg and IE8 and it works great.
